Visiting Developer :: College of Education, U of I

Applications are now being accepted for a Software Developer in the College of Education, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The successful candidate will join the College’s small team of programmers and be involved in the development of the Assess-As-You-Go Writing Assistant: A Student Work Environment That Brings Together Formative and Summative Assessment – a project funded by the US Department of Education.

This position will report to Dr. Bill Cope, the principal investigator in the project. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment will be for two years with possible extension subject to further successful grant applications.

DESCRIPTION
The Software Developer will work with other team members to develop the Writing Assistant software, including planning, designing, coding and testing, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and partner investigators in Computer Science.

The Software Developer will be responsible for programming, monitoring, evaluating, testing, implementing, documenting, and updating the systems software that will be developed to support the Assess-As-You-Go Writing Assistant.

By way of background to this project, a key recent educational priority has been to use summative assessment as an incentive to, and for measurement of, learner progress and school improvement. It is widely agreed, however, that this should to be supplemented by formative assessment, or assessment for screening, monitoring and diagnosis. This project aims to tackle the challenge of effective formative assessment in the area of writing.

Project goals will be to: 1) develop the Assess-As-You-Go Writing Assistant using an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, measurement specialists, content area experts, and educational practitioners; 2) refine a prototype through field tests.

The Software Developer will:

Develop functional and technical specifications to meet the project’s objectives.

Create computer code which meets the functional requirements of the project.

Identify suitable available code and ‘plug-ins’ that can be incorporated into the software.

Test, debug, and implement the software.

Develop and maintain documentation and prescribe how other computer professionals may use the computer system by specifying the technical standards and conventions –providing essential information to users and computing professionals.

Consult with users and computing professionals on technical problems, coordinating work with other areas of technology support in the College of Education.

Adjust software performance by monitoring, measuring, recording, and reporting the utilization and efficiency of the system and assist with predicting the “life” of the system.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and remedy system software failures.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate for this position will have:

A college degree in Computer Science and/or extensive programming experience.

Previous experience in software development.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

A user-needs orientation.

The ability to work well in a team.

Knowledge and expertise in the following areas is essential:

High level software development skills.

User interface design skills.

Proven capacity to deliver software development projects.

High level knowledge and expertise in some of the following areas is desirable, with an ability to learn others:

Programming, with a preference for Ruby on Rails.

Semantic tagging: taxonomies, folksonomies etc.

Natural language processing.

Computer-assisted psychometrics.

STARTING DATE:
As soon as possible.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
To ensure full consideration, applicants must submit a letter of application, a comprehensive résumé, and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three current professional references, to Dr. Colleen Vojak at vojak@ilinois.edu
